Eugenio Pacelli was born in 1876 into a Roman family with deep Church connections. After seminary and a Canon Law doctorate, he rose in the Vatican to Papal Nuncio to Bavaria in 1917, and Germany in 1920, with his speeches decrying the rising tide of Nazis and negotiating a document between Germany and the Holy See (The Reichskonkordat) to protect Catholic institutions under Hitler. In 1935 as Camerlengo of the Church he met with Roosevelt to renew US and Church relations since its absence in the 1870s. As Pope in 1939, he dogmatically defined the Assumption of Mary and appointed more non-Italians to the Curia before dying in 1958.
