Born in 1766 a Haitian slave to the Pierre Berand, his grandmother was allowed to teach him how to read and write. Accompanied his owner to New York City in 1787. Apprenticed to a local hairdresser, became renown in the trade, working in the homes of the rich. Used his wealth to support Mr. Berand’s widow and household, granted freedom in 1807 and married Juliette in 1811. Devoted to charitable work, opening their home to refugees and orphans they raised and educated. Bought the freedom of many slaves. Used wealth to serve the poor and sick, black and white. Remembered for crossing barricades to nurse Yellow Fever victims. Built first NY Catholic school for blacks. Devout Catholic, he supported the church and contributed to building the original St. Patrick’s Cathedral where he was once denied entrance and later interred. Died at 87 one of NYC’s most famous Catholics.
