Born in Ireland in 1909 to a devout family, they immigrated to the US settling in Scranton, PA. He found work as a cathedral janitor where he first met priests of the Congregation of the Holy Cross in 1929; he and his brother Tom were ordained priests of the Holy Cross in 1941. In 1938 he was diagnosed with tuberculosis but after praying with great faith to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was cured through her intercession. Known as “The Rosary Priest,” he devoted his life to promoting the Rosary, using media (radio, television and film), with the help of celebrities and political and religious personalities to reach millions of people all over the world. His messages “The family that prays together stays together” and “A world at prayer is a world at peace” are well known around the world. Across the globe, his Rosary rallies attracted hundreds of thousands, including rallies in the Philippines and South America with over a million. At his death in 1992 he had preached to over 28 million.
