Born in Illinois in 1895, he was an 8-yr-old altar boy when after dropping the wine cruet at a Bishop’s Mass, was told he would one day study in Belgium and become a bishop himself. Ordained in 1919, he did study in Belgium before teaching at The Catholic University for 23 years. Traveling the U.S., his oratory skills reached beyond campus with weekly talks on The Catholic Radio Hour from 1930-1950. Publishing 66 books, he became a bishop in 1951, and began the television series Life is Worth Living with 30 million viewing his chalkboard lessons weekly. Grounded in a daily holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament throughout his life, he retired an Archbishop of Rochester, NY.
