Tradition of St. Elizabeth – daughter of the line of Aaron, cousin of Virgin Mary, mother of St. John the Baptist, wife of priest Zechariah – as “righteous before God” and “blameless” but childless, comes from St. Luke’s Gospel. Desiring a child, Zechariah prayed in the temple but was struck mute when questioning God’s providence in Elizabeth’s elderly pregnancy, who rejoiced! After the Annunciation, Mary went to serve Elizabeth; when she arrived, John leapt in the womb. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth proclaimed to Mary, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:41-45)
