Feast Day: December 8

In 1854, Pope Piux IX proclaimed the Catholic Dogma: “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.” Refers to the conception of Mary (The Immaculata) by her mother St. Anne, who was aged (gray outfit) praying for a child with her husband St. Joachim. This feast arose in the Eastern Church in the 7th c., came to the West in the 8th c., and received the name The Immaculate Conception in the 11th c. In the 18th c. became a feast in the Universal Church, now recognized as a solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation.
