Born in 1212 to a poor Christian Italian family. With her older sister a Cistercian nun and her uncle a hermit, she tried to do God’s will obediently; at age 12 became a housekeeper to a wealthy family where she remained. Her routine started early with daily Mass and prayers along with her duties, winning others over with her work ethic and generous spirit: “a servant is not holy if she is no busy.” With her virtues, her employers “trusted her with the keys” of the household; she generously gave food and cared for the poor, sick and prisoners. Sought out by important people as word spread of her good deeds and the heavenly visions she received. Acclaimed a saint at her death in 1278; her body remains incorrupt. Miraculous legends include: bread baked by angels; bread in her apron turning to flowers; well water turned into wine; and food pantries replenished. Lucca residents bake bread and bring flowers to the church on her feast. Patron of domestic workers, homemakers, lost keys.
