First married couple canonized together, they were the parents of 9 children, five of whom survived childhood to join religious life, including St. Therese. Married in France in 1858, Louis was a watchmaker, Zelie a lacemaker, they promised they would “Serve God First” together. She wrote over 200 letters which record their very real, human and devout Catholic family, and in their daily lives became saints. Zelie suffered from cancer, dying at 46 when Therese was 4, leaving Louis to raise their 5 daughters. The roots of sanctity go back to family life – St. Therese’s Little Way began in the domestic church of her own home.
