Born in Vercelli, Italy, he was orphaned as an infant and raised by relatives. At 15 this son of Italian nobility decided his desires could not be found in this world; it was revealed he could best serve God as a hermit. He attracted many followers, and a monastery was built. William went on to establish several monasteries now Benedictine. A generous friend to the poor, his holiness and wisdom drew peasants and kings, rich and poor. While performing many miracles, his best known is The Miracle of the Wolf: when a wolf killed his donkey, William ordered the wolf to take up the donkey’s tasks, thus taming him to people’s amazement.
