Born in Devonshire, England around 710, the daughter of St. Richard the Pilgrim (an underking of the West Saxons) and sister of Sts. Willibald and Winebald. At 11, her father and brothers went on a pilgrimage to Rome, entrusting her to the Wimborne Monastery; the nuns were skilled at copying and ornamenting manuscripts and celebrated for Opus Anglicanum, a highly desired fine needlework utilizing gold and silver threads on rich velvet or linen, decorated with jewels and pearls. There a year when notified her father had passed on his journey. After his burial, her brothers traveled and pursed monastic life; Walburga continued her education at the monastery, becoming a nun. Sent with St. Lioba to Germany to help St. Boniface in his missionary work. Appointed abbess of a double monastery at Heidenheim founded by her brother; The Oil of St Walburga (oil cruet) that flows from the stone slab and surrounding metal plate on which rest her relics in Bavaria. Died in 779.
