Son of a Sicilian senator, became a Christian at 12. When his miracles became widely known, fled to Rome where he freed Diocletian’s son of evil spirits. Unwilling to sacrifice to the gods, accused of sorcery and tortured in boiling oil with a rooster. Unscathed, he fled during a storm, leaving behind destroyed temples but guided to safety by an angel. One of the 14 Holy Helpers, devotion to him arose in Germany; on his feast, dancing before his statue obtains a year’s good health. St. Vitus’ Dance, a neurological disorder, is named after this practice. Patron of dancers, against storms, oversleeping, epileptics, those afflicted by St. Vitus’ Dance.
