Born to a poor family in France in 1581, he was Franciscan educated and ordained in 1600. Captured as a slave, he escaped after 2 years to become a Count’s chaplain in charge of poor distributions. Began preaching missions to improve lay and priestly formation, established hospitals, and provided relief to jgreat, founded Daughters of Charity and Vincentian priestly orders, and lay Ladies of Charity to serve. Died at 80, “The Apostle of Charity,” “The Father of the Poor,” “symbol of the successful reform of the French church.” His incorrupt heart remains in Paris. Patron of charities, hospitals, volunteers, prisoners
