A lector (catechist) at the cathedral of Lyons, France and held in high esteem by the bishop, St. Justus (Just), and the congregants. As the earliest type of cathedral school teacher, he displayed zeal in his lectorate functions of reading and expounding the Scriptures to the people and catechizing the children. Referred to as “a most holy youth, who on account of his eminent virtues was beloved.” Around 381 after the Council of Aquileia, Justus decided to live as a hermit in Egypt and Viator followed him. He died at a monastery of Scetes (Wadi El Natrun) in 389AD. Selected as the patron of a community parochial clerics (catechists) of priests and teaching brothers living on a footing of religious equality. Known as the Clerics of St. Viator (Viatorians) founded in 1835, they have had important parochial schools around the world, including St. Viator College in IL.
