In the 2nd c. in Italy a pious Christian mother, St. Sophia (Wisdom), named her daughters Vera (Faith), Nadezhda (Hope), and Liubov (Love) after the three Christian virtues, raising them in love of Christ. Opening confessing their faith to all, they were brought before the Roman emperor Adrian (117-138 AD), the holy virgins praying fervently for strength not to fear torture or death. All were amazed by their composure, as they were summoned to offer sacrifice to the gods but refused. Vera (12) and her sisters (10 and 9) were unyielding as they were fiercely tortured: burned over an iron grate, thrown into a hot oven, and placed in a cauldron of boiling tar. But the Lord preserved them, as they glorified Him and remained steadfast in their faith. Sophia was forced to watch the torturing of her children and their eventual beheading. She placed their bodies in coffins, reverently burying them on a high place; she sat there for three days praying before dying, buried by her daughters.
