Born in the 3rd or 4th c. the daughter of a Christian British king who arranged her marriage to a pagan prince, delayed for three years due to her two requests: he become a Christian and she be allowed a Rome pilgrimage. According to legend, with 11,000 virgin attendants (10 ladies in waiting with 1000 attendants each), they embarked across the North Sea (including a miraculous storm that carried them across in one day), sailed up the Rhine to Switzerland and onto Rome. On their return through Cologne, they were besieged by Huns who beheaded the virgins in a massacre and the Hun leader fatally shot Ursula with an arrow. A basilica was built in Cologne to honor the martyred virgins, substantiating the legend. The Order of Ursulines was founded by St. Angela Merici in 1535, devoted to the education of young girls. Christopher Columbus named the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean in her honor. Patron of Order of St. Ursula (Ursulines), Catholic school girls, Cologne.
