Born “Anno” in 1881, he and his siblings grew up on their parents’ dairy in rural Germany as devout Catholics. From 11 educated at prep school for priesthood, joining the Carmelites in 1898, taking the name Titus in honor of his father. Ordained in 1905, translated the works of St. Teresa of Avila into Dutch, and became a professor of philosophy who taught at various universities. Served as ecclesiastical advisor to Catholic Journalists, delivered a letter from the Conference of Dutch Bishops ordering Catholic newspapers not to print Nazi propaganda. Imprisoned in Dachau concentration camp for speaking against the spread of Nazism, defending the right to freedom in education and the Catholic press. While in prison, he was well-known for this kindness and spiritual support to other prisoners, including the nurse who administered his fatal experimental injection in 1942; he gave her a wooden rosary and she later became Catholic and testified to his holiness.
