His name meaning “honored by God”, he was born at Lystra the son of a Greek father and converted Jewess. A respected member of the Christian congregation along with his grandmother and mother, he joined St. Paul, replacing Barnabas and becoming Paul’s close confidant - “I have no one like him.” Probably with Paul when he was imprisoned in Rome, himself imprisoned then freed before chosen the first bishop of Ephesus. Reserved and timid, he was beaten, dragged through the streets, and stoned to death around 97 AD when he opposed the pagan festival in honor of the goddess Diana. Paul wrote two letters to Timothy in the New Testament, one written about 65 from Macedonia and the second from Rome while in prison awaiting execution.

Battling ill health himself, he is the patron against stomach and intestinal disorders
