Born in 1488 in Spain, ordained to the Augustinian friars despite absentmindedness and poor memory. Becoming Bishop of Valencia (orange), he was a bold reformer of the Augustinian way of life, a humble and simple bishop showing a countercultural life to his fellow prelates. “Father of the Poor” committed to the material and spiritual impoverished, money given to furnish his house was passed to a hospital instead; he wore the same habit received in the novitiate, mending it himself. Several hundred poor came to his doorstep each morning for food/money. Took in orphans, encouraged wealthy to be richer in mercy and charity than possessions. Founded colleges, organized priests to serve the Moors, and promoted Tridentine reforms. Died of natural causes after giving all his wealth to the poor in 1555. His episcopal emblem is dominated by a pelican who resembles selfless giving.
