Born in 1478 in London and educated Oxford lawyer, he lived near a monastery following their simple piety. Elected to Parliament, King Henry VIII favored him with knighthood and Lord Chancellor. As a writer and theologian, he defended the Catholic faith in England. When More refused to support Henry’s annulment and remarriage, tensions rose. With the King’s schism from the Roman Church, More resigned but false accusations continued. Locked in the Tower of London for treason, he was beheaded “the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” Patron of lawyers, politicians, adopted children, difficult marriages
