A new recruit for the Roman army when an edict was issued that all soldiers join pagan worship, he refused and was jailed for a short time where he contemplated the evils of paganism. After freed, he set fire to the pagan temple of Cybele, for which he was tortured and burned alive at Amasea in 306. St. Gregory of Nyssa preached about his intercession in battle and thus he became known as the dragon-slayer and warrior saint adopted as the patron of the crusaders. An ordinary foot soldier, he was viewed by the Byzantium as a patron of common soldiers. At the foot of the Palatine in Rome is a very old church dedicated to Theodore where Romans brought their sick children. His martyrdom is represented in the choir of the Cathedral of Chartres by 38 glass paintings of the 13th c.
