When a 3rd century bishop received a letter to send Holy Communion to Christian prisoners facing martyrdom, he requested a brave volunteer as it was too dangerous for clergy. With a deep love for the Eucharist, the young altar server, Tarsisius, stood up. He was given some hosts carefully wrapped in a linen cloth and placed in a s small case which he wrapped in his tunic over this heart. He was accosted and beaten to death on the Appian Way by a mob, preferring death in protection of the Blessed Sacrament, but not before entrusting it to a Roman Soldier he knew from the catacombs as a Christian.
