The beautiful daughter of St Gabinius of Rome, a priest, and niece of Pope Caius, she was a Christian virgin who refused Emperor Diocletian’s request to marry his son-in-law, Maximian. In the process, she converted two of her uncles, Claudius and Maximus, who were court officers sent by the emperor with this request. Enraged, Diocletian sent one of his favorites, Julian, to deal with the matter, who had her two uncles and Cladius’ wife, Praepedigna, and their two sons burned to death at Cumae. Susanna and her father were then beheaded in their home in 295. The home was turned into a church (St. Gaius) but by 595 renamed the Church of Santa Susanna because of her popularity.
