In the 11th century, Sophia of Thrace, a daughter of pious parents, married a wealthy man and became a model wife and mother of 6 children, living a virtuous life. At 34, a plague took the lives of all her children and her husband. Heartbroken, she remained faithful to God and called to open to her home to caring for others. Her hospitality extended to all and when adults sought refuge in her home, she poured them a glass of rare vintage wine from her urn which miraculously never went empty. She became known as “Mother of Orphans,” for over a period of 20 years, she adopted more than 100 children and raised them all in the love of God.
