A Galilean, he was one of the twelve Apostles surnamed the Zealot. This title distinguished him from St. Peter and St. Simeon, brother of St. James the Lesser. It is also because he was believe to be part of sect of Jews called the Zealots before coming to Christ, who possessed a zeal for the honor of God and the purity of religion, also a group who led a military revolution against the Roman government. After his conversion to Christianity, he was zealous for the honor of Christ and exact in all the duties of the Christian life. Showed pious indignation towards those who profess the faith with their mouths but not their lives. Preached the Gospel in Egypt and Persia joining St. Jude along the way. Pictured with saw as he was believed martyred by being cut in half; other accounts say he was crucified. Popular symbol of fish/book for being a great fisher of men.
