Born in 1165 in Kent, England, so strongly devoted to God in his youth that he left home at 12 to live in the forest as a hermit, living on fruit and water in prayer and meditation. After two decades of solitary life in the wilderness, returned to society for education and the priesthood. Afterward, he returned to his hermitage until 1212 when his call to join the Carmelite Order was revealed to him. The Blessed Mother appeared to Simon, telling him to leave his hermitage and join the order that would be arriving to England with the return of two English Crusaders. She appeared with a multitude of angels, holding the Scapular of the Order in her blessed hands and saying, “This will be a privilege for you and all Carmelites, that he who dies in this will not suffer eternal fire.” This is the source of the Brown Scapular devotion, a tradition that involves wearing an adapted version of the garment, along with certain spiritual commitments, by lay Catholics and religious. Died at 100. Feast Day: May 16
