From Cyrene in northern Africa, he is compelled by the Romans to help carry the cross of Jesus down the Via Dolorosa as He was taken to His Crucifixion. Clearly struggling, the Pharisees don’t want Jesus to die along the way after the flogging; they want him to die on the cross, theological proof that He was cursed by God. A passerby on his way to work, Simon is called out by the guards. Unable to evade, he found himself face-to-face with the One for whom he was to “take up his cross and follow.” (Mark 8:34).
