For generations, the people of God waited for and expected a Messiah, a Savior, including Simeon, a man “righteous and devout” (Luke 2:25). Joseph and Mary, in faithfulness to the Law, traveled to Jerusalem with the infant Jesus to present Him to God in the temple, “The Presentation in the Temple” (Luke 2:2, Exodus 13:1-2). When Simeon saw Jesus, the long awaited “consolation of Israel,” he picked him up in his arms and praised God (“The Canticle of Simeon” Luke 2:29-32). Joseph and Mary “marveled at what was said about him (Luke 2:33). He also spoke to Mary: “Behold, this child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2:34).
