One of the leaders of the Church of Jerusalem, sent with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch to communicate the decisions of the Council of Jerusalem to eh Gentile community in Syria. When Paul and Barnabas quarrel over St. Mark’s participation, Silas is chosen to accompany Paul on his 2nd mission journey to Syria, Cilicia and Macedonia. Beaten and imprisoned with Paul in Philippi where an earthquake broke their chains and opened the prison door (acts 16:25-37). Involved with Paul in riot of Jews at Thessalonica, threatening Paul’s safety and causing him to separate from Silas and Timothy; the trio are listed as co-authors of the two New Testament letters to the Thessalonians. They rejoined Paul, helping him preach at Corinth (2 Cor 1:19). Mentioned as a “faithful brother” (1 Pet 5:12) and as the man though whom Peter communicated; considered by some scholars to be the author of that epistle. Tradition says he was the first bishop of Corinth and died in Macedonia in 50AD.
