Samuel and four companions (Elias, Daniel, Isaias and Jeremy) were Egyptians who visited and comforted Christians condemned to work in the mines of Cilicia during Maximus’ persecution. Apprehended at the gates of Caesarea, Palestine, they were brought before Firmilian, the Roman governor of the Judaea Province, who enforced the Diocletian Persecution at Caesarea, the province's capital (c. 234). Accused of being Christians (cross), they were tortured and beheaded (palm for martyrdom). When Porphyry, a servant of St. Pamphilus, demanded the bodies be buried, he was tortured and burned to death because of his Christianity. Seleucus witnessed Porphyry’s death and applauded his perseverance, whereupon, he, too, was arrested by the soldiers, brought before the governor, and beheaded. Patron of miners (ax/shovel/coal).
