Daughter of Herod Metallarius and wealthy widow of Senator Valentinus, originally from Avezzano, Italy, she converted to Christianity due to the example of her Syrian slave Serapia; together, at night, they would descend into the catacombs where Christians gathered to escape persecution. Widowed, she withdrew with a few devout friends to one of her country seats where she spent her time doing good works. Serapia was denounced and tortured for her faith, beheaded in the city of Vindena in Umbria. Sabina rescued her remains and interred them in the family mausoleum. Initially discharged out of regard for her status and friends, Sabina was later denounced as well, accused of being a Christian by Elpidio the Prefect. Martyred by decapitation in Rome in 126AD under the persecution of Emperor Hadrian. In 430 her relics were brought to the renowned basilica on the Aventine in Rome dedicated to and named after her, and believed to stand on the site of her former house.
