Born in France in 1769, befriended St Madeleine Sophie Barat and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart. Desiring to serve Native Americans and facing the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror, at 49 she and four sisters sent as missionaries to the Louisiana Territory to establish the Society in America. With divine grace, courage and much faith, started free schools for girls and Native Americans in MO and KS (her first school for Native Americans at age 71). In 1841 went to eastern KS to serve the Potawatomi tribe; unable to master the language, she offered her constant prayers. The children named her Quahkahkanumad (“woman who prays always”), placing rocks and leaves on her dress while she prayed and finding them undisturbed the next morning. First canonized female saint west of the Mississippi. Patron of perseverance amid adversity
