Born in Lima, Peru in 1586 she was drawn to the penitential practices of St. Catherine of Siena. As “lovely as a rose,” her parents wanted her to marry but she refused, instead cutting her hair, burning her face, and joining the Dominican Third Order. Taking religious vows and living in a hut in her parents’ garden, she cared for the sick and performed many miracles until her death at age 31. Patron of gardeners. Feast Day: August 23
