Born in France with a red cross birthmark on his chest, a sign his pius mother’s barrenness was healed. The son of a wealthy governor, he turned over his inheritance to the poor and made a pilgrimage to Rome. Caring for plague victims, he performed many miracles by making the sign of the cross over them. When he contracted the disease in his leg, a dog found Roch, bringing daily food and licking his wounds. He returned to France, imprisoned as a spy by his uncle where he died.
