A Doctor of the Church, he was born in Italy the third of 10 children in 1542; his pious mother was the niece of Pope Marcellus II. He entered the newly formed Society of Jesus in 1560 and rose to Cardinal, defending the Holy See against heretics and anti-clerics. Such a staunch advocate of the Church, Queen Elizabeth forbade her subjects from reading his works or face death. In church and state relations he stated that authority originates with God, vested in the people, who entrust it to fit rulers. The spiritual father of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, he helped St. Frances de Sales obtain approval for The Visitation Order, and prudent in the case of Galileo.
