Born in Wessex, England, he had many saints in his family including his brother-in-law St. Baniface (archbishop), and his sons St. Willibald (bishop) and St. Winnebald (abbot), and daughter St. Walburga (abbess). Raised a Christian, through prayer, he aided his three-year-old son to recover from a grave illness. Wrapping him in a blanket and mounting his horse, he rode out into the night to a wayside crucifix near the village where they lived. He placed the child at the foot of the cross and knelt in prayer, pleading for his son’s life. His son recovered and two years later, was entrusted to the abbot of Warham to be trained. Later in life, Richard renounced his estate and traveled with his sons on a pilgrimage route to Rome around 721, praying at the Shrines situated along the way. He later fell ill with a fever and died in Lucca, Tuscany; buried at the Church of San Frediano, miracles were reported at his tomb and veneration started soon after his death.
