Born in 1608 in Angers, France, a Jesuit novice but because of ill health had to leave. Wanting to continue to pursue a vocation, became a surgeon and found his way to Canada in 1640 to provide services as a layman to the Jesuit missionaries; worked both in humble manual labor in the Jesuit house and as a surgeon in the Quebec hospitals. In 1642 received permission to accompany St Isaac Jogues back to the mission at Huronia; Jogues noted, “I cannot express the joy which this good young man felt when the Superior told him that he might make ready for the journey.” The canoe party was ambushed and tortured by the Iroquois, with Rene showing “a most uncommon patience and gentleness.” In captivity Rene told him, “O my father, God be blessed; he has permitted it, he has willed it – his holy will be done. I love it, I desire it, I cherish it, I embrace it with all the strength of my heart.” When an elder objected to his making the sign of the Cross over a child, martyred by tomahawk. Patron of anesthetists. Feast Day: October 19
