Born in 1175 to Spanish nobility, became a brilliant teacher of philosophy and law. A Dominican at 41, assisted in founding the Order of Our Lady of Ransom saving Christians from Moors. While Pope Gregory IX’s confessor asked to compile church canon law into a collection. Wrote moral theology book for confessors (key is symbol for confession). Bishop of Tarragona at 60, left to head Dominicans at 63, reorganizing their constitutions and resigning two years later. When on a trip to Majorca with King James who was acting immorally, Raymond decided to leave but no ship captain would help due to King’s threat. Putting trust in God, he spread his cloak on the water, tied a corner to a stick, made the Sign of the Cross and stepped onto it sailing 6 hours back to Barcelona. In his last 35 years combated heresy and converted 10,000 Muslims. Before passing at 100, convinced St. Thomas Aquinas to write “Against the Gentiles.” Patron of canon lawyers, civil lawyers
