Born in Spain of noble class he was miraculously delivered by Caesarean when his mother died in childbirth, hence his name “non natus” (not born). Devoted to Mary, he joined the Mercedarians to become chief ransomer traveling to Algeria to ransom slaves. Imprisoned for religious proselytizing, Moors bored holes in his lips to seal with a padlock. Pictured with palms of martyrs for life defeating death and the 3 crowns of chastity, eloquence and martyrdom. Returned to Spain in 1239, appointed a Cardinal, but died the following year. Patron of expectant mothers and midwives. Invoked against gossip, keeping secrets and the seal of confession.
