One of seven Archangels who stand before the Lord’s throne, his name means “God heals.” Appearing only in the Book of Tobit disguised as a human who travels alongside Tobit's son, Tobiah, he is sent by the Lord to heal Tobit’s blindness and deliver Sarah, Tobiah's future wife, from demons. He is presumed to be the angel in the Gospel of John at the pool of Bethesda who moves the waters to heal people. Holding a travelers’ staff with a drinking gourd, he carries a fish for healing: smoke from burning the heart and liver would exorcise evil spirits, and the gall would restore sight to the blind.
