Disciple of St. John the Apostle and friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch, considered one the three chief Apostolic Fathers of the Church. Revered Christian leader, chosen as Asia Minor Churches representative to discuss date of Easter with Pope Anicetus, a major controversy of the early Church. Bishop of Smyrna (Turkey), protected the Church against heresies that Jesus was fully human and was incarnate. His miraculous martyrdom at 86 in 156AD recorded by St. Irenaeus: entering the Roman arena with other Christians, they heard a voice from heaven, “Be brave, Polycarp, and act like a man.” When asked to swear by Caesar to save himself, he answered, “Let me tell you plainly, I am a Christian.” Romans tried to burn him alive but the flames arched around his glowing body; then they stabbed him, but his blood put out the fire. Before dying of the stab wounds he said, “I bless you Father for judging me of this hour, so that in the company of the martyrs I may share the cup of Christ.” Feast Day: February 23
