Born in 1189, as a teenager in Spain joined an army fighting the Moors in the Iberian Peninsula; at 25 appointed tutor to the young king James I of Aragon. Between 8th-15th c., medieval Europe in warfare between Christians and Muslims; captured prisoners were considered war booty and those not ransomed were sold as slaves. After a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Monserrat, he began practicing works of charity and grew concerned for the captives. In 1203 he began ransoming Christian captives and with St. Raymond of Penafort, founded the Royal and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy of the Redemption of the Captives (the Mercedarians), a lay confraternity and religious community ransoming Christian prisoners. The order attracted young noblemen equipped to handle ransoms and friars of holy orders; their white habit signified innocence and King James enthusiastically authorized his Aragon coat of arms on their long scapulars. Died in 1256.
