Born in 1260 to a wealthy Italian family, he was active in politics and an anti-papal rebellion – even striking a priest who was defending the Church. When the priest offered the other cheek, Peregrine converted to Catholicism and began a life of charity. Joining the Servites, he never allowed himself to sit down as a penance. An ideal priest, he was a good confessor with a reputation for fervent preaching but practiced silence and solitude. When afflicted with foot cancer and facing amputation, he spent the night before the operation in prayer. The following morning he was completely cured.
