A well-known Antioch actress/ harlot, she inspired Christians as an enchanting icon of repentance. One day beautifully attired in jewels, she passed a group of bishops; Bishop Nonnus noted: “she spends more time adorning herself than we do preparing our souls to meet God.” That night, he dreamt of a dove covered in soot that he plunged into the baptismal font; washed clean as snow it flew away. The next day, Pelagia came into his church, weaping tears of repentance and confessing her sins. He exorcised her, baptized her and gave her The Eucharist. Giving her wealth to the poor, she laid aside her baptismal white robes, took a tunic and disappeared to live as a hermit.
