Born in 1540 on Pentecost to a Spanish poor, pious family, he worked as a shepherd, living a life of mortification and a vow of poverty his entire life. Praying on the job, he was especially attention to the church bell, which rang at the Elevation during Mass. Teaching himself to read, he received a vision in 1564 to join the Friars Minor, giving himself wholeheartedly to a life of penance. Though urged to study for the priesthood, he chose to be a brother, where he served as a doorkeeper, cook and gardener. As a cook, he would never waste any food or anything given to the friars. As the doorkeeper, he took care of the poor coming to the door, developing a reputation for great generosity and wise counsel. He spent his spare moments praying before the Blessed Sacrament. On a mission to France, he defended the doctrine of the Real Presence against a Calvinist preacher and other irate Calvinists. Died at a friary in Villareal in 1592. Patron of cooks and Eucharistic Congresses and Societies.
