One of the 14 Holy Helpers, born in Nicomedia near the Black Sea in Asia to a wealthy pagan Eustorgias and Ebbula, a Christian mother who taught him the faith. As a physician to Emperor Maximianus, he became estranged from Christianity, but with the help of a holy priest Hermolaos, he reverted back to the faith, giving his fortune and services to the poor. Once seeing a dead child bitten by a viper, he offered prayers that if this child was revived, he would accept Baptism; the child lived and the viper shattered into pieces. Seeing Pantaleon heal a blind man invoking the Name of Jesus Christ, his father converted and was baptized with the man. Visited prisoners (mostly all Christians) and healed them. Becoming a popular healer, jealous doctors turned him into the emperor. Martyred during Diocletian persecution, he implored heaven to forgive his persecutors. Known as the “Great Martyr”, “Wonder-Worker” and “Pantaleon the Healer.” Patron of physicians, midwives. Feast Day: July 27
