Also known as St. Audoin, born in France about 600AD of a wealthy aristocratic Frankish family who housed the exiled St. Columban who greatly influenced him. Sent to the court of St. Clotaire II, he was an excellent student gaining favor of the King and his son, who appointed him chancellor. While in office, he steadily opposed the prevalence of corrupt simony (the buying and selling of ecclesiastical privilege), a struggle to keep the light of Christianity burning. He became a monk and monastery builder, made bishop of Rouen in Normandy in 641. Building monastery after monastery, he clearly saw that only through these centers of Catholic living and learning could Europe be saved from darkness. With his zeal, piety and learning, he also gained a reputation for assisting the poor and homeless and ministering to widows and orphans throughout the kingdom. Around 675 he made a pilgrimage to Rome, bringing back relics to Rouen. He died in 684 buried in Church of Sant-Peter which he built. Feast Day: March 25
