Born in 1917, he was Archbishop of San Salvador, El Salvador when he was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating Mass. By the time of his death, Romero had built up an enormous following among Salvadorans. He did this largely through broadcasting his weekly sermons across El Salvador on the church's station. He spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations, and torture amid a growing war between left-wing and right-wing forces. Up to the end of his life, his spiritual life drew much from the spirituality of Opus Dei.
