Born in 595 to a noble, wealthy family in the region of Normandy, France who invested in his education and inspired virtue. Upon the death of his mother, he and his father entered the monastery of Luxeuil under St. Eustace after giving their wealth to the poor. His humility, and devotion distinguished him, and in 637 after 20 years in the community, named bishop of Therouanne. Because the area had relapsed into heathenism, he implemented numerous reforms for the diocese including caring for the sick and poor. Founded the monastery of Sithiu which gained prominence as a religious center of France; by the 9th c. a town called St. Omer had developed around it. Became blind In his old age but that did not lessen his pastoral concern for his flock. When touched by St. Vaast’s relics, his eyesight was restored; upon realizing blindness was more beneficial to the soul, he asked the saint for his sight to be taken away again. Died in 670. Patron of the blind (silver ribbon).
