About 300, St. Odilia joined St. Ursula and other virgins on a pilgrimage to the East from England. The ship accidentally sailed up the Rhine, was captured by soldiers and taken to Cologne. The young women were martyred in defense of their faith and their purity. In 1287 she appeared three times to Brother John Novelan of Eppa, a Crosier lay brother in the Paris monastery, telling him that God had commanded her to be the Protectress of the Order and where her relics could be found; John and a companion journeyed to Cologne to retrieve the relics and take them to the motherhouse of the Croziers in Huy, Belgium. Many cures took place through her intercession, especially eye diseases; for centuries the order has blessed water, dipping her relic in it and asking God to give it “power against all diseases and bodily infirmities.” Her role as the Patroness of the Order of the Holy Cross (Crosier Fathers) is pictured by the Crosier standard and her motto, “I have chosen the cross.” Patron of the blind and the Crosiers.
