Born in 1613 the youngest of four in France, he became a successful Jesuit priest and professor in his native France, but fervently wanted to be a New France missionary and prayed to be accepted as a martyr. Finally reaching the land of the native peoples in 1643, the reality of a missionary’s life was less romantic to him, finding the language incomprehensible and the living revolting. Nevertheless, he remained even when given permission to return to France, seeing the missions as God’s will and vowing to persist. He became an assistant to Fr. Garnier at Etarita in 1649 to evangelize the Hurons in modern Ontario, Canada; while returning from a visit to neighboring Sainte Marie, an apostate Indian offered to take Noel across the river in a canoe, but killed him and threw his body overboard. Led by St. Isaac Jogues, the eight North American martyrs – also known as the Canadian Martyrs – included six priests and two lay brothers, the first Catholic martyred saints of North America.
